This anthropological study examines the nature and context of Dalit discourses, organizational structure, and the local practices of activists. The focus is on the heterogeneity, internal tensions, and transnational connections of the movement. The author argues that contradictions within the movement contribute to its growth and stronger cultural identity. She presents three separate but influential Dalit discourses-Dalit Buddhism, Dalit Christian theology, and the Dalit political perspective. She also addresses issues of Dalit feminism and gender relations in the movement. The essays examine the role played by traditional key figures like Ambedkar and Gandhi in developing the movement. They also discuss contemporary figures like Kanshi Ram, Mayawati, and Phoolan Devi and their contributions to the movement.
